Green Lake Schools
The first one room schoolhouse was built in Dartford in 1845 on the southwest corner of the present public-school site. This building not only served as a school but was also used temporarily for church services while churches were being built. For one summer the building was even used as a home. The Root family needed a place to live as they were building their home.
In 1860 it was necessary to enlarge the school, so a second room was built. Later, a vestibule, a belfry and a flagpole were added. This building served Dartford well into the 1890s when the school board made an appropriation for $4000 to build a new school. The building you see in these cards was built in 1898-1899. The old building was sold to Joe Thrasher Jr, and he used it as a shed on his farm just north of town for many years.
The original building was two stories, with two classrooms on each floor, with an office and library on the second floor. In a very short time an addition was needed, and in 1904 two more rooms were added on the first floor and an assembly room for the high school on the second floor.
In 1913 the final addition was added to the north end of this building. A connecting hallway and rooms to house the first four elementary grades.
In 1953 expansion required the building of a new modern elementary school. By 1958 a new High school was planned to the east of the old high school. On May 19, 1957, last day ceremonies were held at the old school building, and the next day it was demolished. As soon as the building was demolished, the gymnasium was built on the site.
