Bible Institute / Pilgrim Center / Daycholah Center
The Green Lake Bible Institute was built on the site of an ancient Indian meeting place on Spring Grove Road. The first service was held at this site in 1901. Now known as the Pilgrim Center and under the auspice of the Congregational Church, it offers activities for children and adults of all faiths.
Green Lake was the first resort area west of Niagara Falls, and as a result many postcards were produced showing the sights around the lake. The Green Lake Bible Institute produced more post cards than any of them, or so it would seem. We have over 100 cards Pilgrim Center cards and we selected 60 to highlight here.
The actual years of operation are not known, though the postcards we have are from the 1910s and 1920s. The Girls Friendly Society, founded in 1877, is still active. The Girl’s Friendly Society provides ministry to girls in a safe and accepting environment where Christ’s love is evident. GFS-USA is a community within the Episcopal Church and a member of the World Council of GFS.
The Delbert “Del” Formiller bought the property in 1952 and turned this area into a resort called the Holiday House. They had cabins and guest rooms. You could rent a boat or just relax on the beach with a beer. They sold the resort in 1985 or 1987. After that the Sunrise Point Condominiums were built on the site. GL Memories II p192
Green Lake Campgrounds
Sandstone Camp Camp / Camp Day-Cho-La
Camp Sandstone was built on the historical site of William Lucas’ home “Cote Brilliante.” The camp was started in 1911 by Miss Elva Holford and Miss Esther Cochran. Miss Elva Holford retired in 1925 and the camp was run by Miss Esther Cochran Dunham until 1937. Mrs. Gladys Reichenbach ran the camp from 1937 to 1959 when she added the “Brother Camp” Day-Cho-Lah. Chris and Jane Vee purchased the camp in 1959 and ran the camp until it closed in 1973. The last remnant of the camp was removed from the shore in 2023.

I do not think this is an image of Sandstone. The advertising on the back is interesting though.
Camp Robinhood / Sherwood Forest
During the Depression, the Sherwood Forest Hotel business declined, so it was decided in 1932 to open a girls’ camp, Camp Robinhood, on half of the property. This arrangement went on for a couple of years, until the hotel was abandoned and the whole property became a camp. The private girls camp lasted until the mid-1950’s when it became a group camp for organized groups. The Mapps family ran the camp until it closed in 1968 and the property was sold to Charlie and Russell Anderson.
Camp Tichora was established in 1920. It was a Boy Scout Camp until 1958 when it was sold to the American Baptist Church of metro Chicago and renamed Camp Grow. It was purchased by the Green Lake Conservatory and Sanitary District in 2017. It is now a beautiful natural area with nice trails and rocky beach area. Ripon Press 07/01/2021
