The game of golf came to Dartford in 1893 when Dr. Victor Kutchin laid out a 9-hole golf course on his Maplewood property. At that time, it was billed as the oldest golf course in Wisconsin. Three years later, in 1896, Dr. Kutchin felt that this “rich man’s game” would never last and decided that his land was more valuable as farmland and would not expand the course. Shortly after that the first 40 acres was purchased east of Dartford that would become Tuscombia Golf Course.
Today, Tuscombia is a challenging and beautiful course just east of the city. Click on the link below to reserve a Tee Time.
These are images of the first club house. Originally this was located west of the current driveway, later it was moved to the East of the driveway to make room for a redesigned course.
About 1918-1919 The second 9 holes were added, and the old clubhouse was moved from its old location along Illinois avenue to the middle of the property, near where the current clubhouse is located. In 1920 the original clubhouse was moved again, this time North of County Trunk A and was converted to a private residence. A larger and more modern clubhouse was built and lasted until the 1980s when the current club house was built.
Lawsonia Golf Course
Victor Lawson bought the first parcel that would become Lawsonia in 1887. In the early 1900s Mr. Victor Lawson laid out a 9-hole golf course for his friends. The Lone Tree Links was located on the old Hoffman farm to the southwest of the first 9 of the current Lawsonia Course. Mr. Lawson challenged his friends and his brother Iver to play championship games, but he himself never played golf, despite all the teasing. Mrs. Lawson built a rest house adjoining the golf course in 1910.
When Mr. Lawson passed away in 1925 the heirs of Mr. Lawson sold the property to the H.O. Stone Company. The H.O. Stone company planned to build an exclusive county estate. The first 18-hole golf course was built in 1928. By 1930, when the depression hit, the H.O. Stone Company went bankrupt, and the property was sold to the bank. The bank ran the property for a while as the Lawsonia Estates. In the winter of 1943, The Northern Baptist Assembly purchased the property from the bank, and the religious future of the property was set. Originally it was called the Northern Baptist Assembly, and later it would become the American Baptist Assembly. In the 1970’s the property would be known as the Green Lake Conference Center.
Currently the Golf Courses of Lawsonia offer two wonderfully unique 18-hole golf experiences on the same property. The Links course is annually ranked as one of the very best courses in the country, and The Woodlands course offers classic parkland style golf in a beautiful natural setting. Lawsonia has great onsite lodging options for groups of all sizes, and their onsite restaurant, Langford’s, is always busy with happy golfers and local Green Lakers.
