The original entrance to the estate was at the Northeast corner of the property where the House of the Seven gables is located. The original Shore Road that ran from the Lawson Cottage along the lake exited the property at this point.  This was supposed to be the main entrance, and the road further to the West was to be the farm / work entrance.  But as it turned out, people preferred the road to the west and that became the Grand Entrance.
